rethinking water

Prerak Trust is a not-for-profit organization striving to provide integrated water and sanitation solutions for urban and rural communities in India. Established in 2012 with its headquarters at Bengaluru, we have since been working in various parts of Karnataka.

Prerak , in Sanskrit, means to spark; to inspire; to be a catalyst.

Our vision is for a healthy and sustainable environment for habitations.

Our mission is to develop collaborative solutions with communities and institutions to:
  • protect water resources
  • provide access to safe water and effective waste management.

Our work involves a wide array of expertise, be it sound technical  studies or applied sociological research. Our team consists of dedicated multi-disciplinary experts with decades of experience in bringing together various stakeholders, to change the terrain of water management in India; to envision, design, deliver and maintain world-class integrated water and sanitation systems.

Prerak perspectives

Only a quarter of the total population in India has drinking water on their premises.

Groundwater is getting steadily depleted due to excessive extraction. Cities are expected to face serious water crisis in the next 10 years.

A large proportion of the rural population is not aware of the need for proper sanitation, leading to misuse of Government schemes and funds. Women and girls are the most vulnerable.

There is extensive contamination of water sources, both organic and industrial.

India is ranked 124th out of 178 countries in terms of access to safe water and sanitation.
